Intimate Productions and UnderG bring THUGFUCKER and DJ TENNIS to Electric Owl on Sat Apr 19th as part of the multi-city North American #ApexTour at #SpottedSaturdays.
THUGFUCKER
Former international aid worker teams up with Icelandic security specialist and former top model to create an international DJ supergroup. Certainly not what you'd expect from a group called Thugfucker - but then Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson often do tend to defy expectations.
One a New Yorker transplanted to Europe, the other an Icelander transplanted to New York. Both from a strong musical background with an almost obsessive dedication to the art of wild party instigation.
Growing up on an Icelandic commune full of some of the country's finest political thinkers, Holmar eschewed his past and all the heady philosophy of his childhood to move to New York and search out more physical and visceral methods of bringing happiness to the masses.
Meanwhile Greg was in the midst of a successful (if short-lived) political career in America when he too became disillusioned with the duplicity and self serving interest of those around him. Disturbed by the void he saw in most people's lives, it was in the dark depths of the New York underground club scene that he finally found his true calling.
Unbeknownst to each other, Holmar and Greg then propelled themselves along similar paths, throwing parties, honing their musical & studio skills and searching out inspiration from a wide variety of musical sources.
Then one late night, in a cloudy alcohol fueled discussion about the plight of the genetically Rhythm-Blind, Holmar and Greg recognized the depth of their shared passions. Thugfucker was born.
DJ TENNIS
DJ Tennis born in the 70s and raised between New Jersey, Sicily and Parma in a family who paid just a passing attention to music. No relatives played any musical instruments, nor were there any around the home - music was never given any special amount of love in the Romano household. But despite this, and perhaps as a direct result of this, Romano's creative and artistic attitude has always centred around music: singing, creating and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn.
In 1988 before embarking on computer science studies he was already playing and singing in college bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo.
Recording with bands, organising events and DJing at the local tennis club where he used to play semi-professionally (his DJ moniker comes from his passion for the sport) became his way to support the costs of his studies, though when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his fully-fledged career. Whilst starting out as a DJ he began focusing on promoting new underground music in his country, founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita festival in Milan and the Dissonanze festival in Rome - at the same time creating forward-thinking new promotional concepts around the Italian clubbing scene.
THE APEX TOUR
Liaison Artists agency aims to reconnect to the roots of dance music by celebrating the art of DJing. Featuring a rotating lineup of underground house and techno stars like Maceo Plex, Dixon, Maya Jane Coles, James Holden, Tale of Us and Justin Martin, APEX promises fluid, unstructured set times offering DJs considerable freedom and fans an opportunity to experience something unique.
“The inspiration for this tour was to build a property that would allow us to showcase cutting-edge artists on a larger medium,” Embrace’s Adam Gill tells Billboard. “There are a lot of exciting artists out there on this tour and we feel like they are ready for a bigger audience.”
“The idea was to showcase another side of electronic music, a side that perhaps has been in the background previously and is really now coming center stage,” says Liaison CEO Andrew Kelsey.
While many of the DJs on the APEX tour are producers as well, fans shouldn’t necessarily expect to hear a given artist’s tracks. This philosophy of DJing stands in contrast to the hit parade performances of big room EDM shows and that, according to Kelsey, is the idea.
“We're really focusing solely on the music here with an emphasis on DJs and the art of really playing a room,” he explains. “The art of DJing kind of took a backseat in the recent past but is coming back fast. We consider many of those featured on this tour to be some of the best at their craft and it's our goal to really showcase them.”
The tour’s production, designed by Los Angeles-based visual media house Strangeloop, will be tailor-made for each show with a mixture of projection mapping and larger installations at some venues, bringing an element of high-tech stimulation that are a staple at EDM festivals.
“I think this tour is for adults who like great music and don't want to be in overpriced bottle service clubs,” says Gill. “EDM draws a younger crowd and I think as the EDM fans get older and explore dance music more, some of them will gravitate to APEX. There is big demand from music fans to see artists in venues that aren't traditional clubs. People want unique experiences and value for their money and we are going to deliver that.”
