With tons of glitter and fabulous outfits, the Vancouver Sisters be taking their lifelong vows to spread universal joy, expiate stigmatic guilt and be of service to their community. They will also declare three leaders in Vancouvers queer communities as Saints, the Order's highest honour. The Exequatur Party will be preceded by a screening of the Kevin OKeefe film Bad Habits, which documents the return of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to Canada.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a worldwide order of 21st century queer nuns with over 60 houses in North America, Australia, South America and Europe. For over thirty years, the Sisters have spread joy and challenged the forces of bigotry, complacency, and guilt with humour and irreverent wit.
In Vancouver, the Sisters focus their work both on HIV/AIDS and on homelessness in the queer community. In their glamorous manifestations, the Sisters not only entertain and bring joy but also raise funds and awareness. They regularly work with local charities to support their fundraising efforts, and also host their own fundraising events to sustain their own work. They provide grants to charities working in the responses to HIV/AIDS and homelessness.
The Vancouver Sisters are always recruiting! They welcome persons of all of genders, sexual orientations, and spiritual traditions. More information can be found on the Abbeys website, www.yvrsisters.ca. Those interested in joining the Sisters can contact Sr. Petunia Encarnata, the Mistress of Novices, though their website.
