Free "Tops & Bottoms" Improv on Mondays - Wickedly
I discovered Monday improv night at J Lounge early in the summer and have been every Monday since. Check their FB page "The Bobbers - Queer Comedy Improv" for the exact start time but it's usually 7pm in the fall/winter and 8pm in the summer. The show is free but they pass the hat at the end. I usually throw in $5; I've always gotten my money's worth. And to be honest some nights I should have put in $20+ because it was so damn good. But it's improv, so your particular experience may vary - there are different players every week. The show is split into two halves; first the Bottoms perform and there is a 15 minute intermission to pee, smoke and refill beverages. Next the Tops do their thing. With each drink you purchase you get a ballot to determine which Bottom gets to be a Top next time, and which Top becomes a Bottom. All performers are gay and there is a good smattering of gay themes used throughout the skits (as suggested by the audience). Note: If you've avoided improv before because of groups that "break the 4th wall" and you cower in fear that you'll be picked on, don't worry here, it doesn't happen. Go see a show - you won't regret it. Note that the J Lounge is on the second floor of the building so you'll just see the staircase from the street. Don't let that fool you, its a big space with 2 (front and back) patio areas - even with fire pits. (Though Vancouver noise laws are pretty strict so the outdoor areas get shut down earlier than you want them to.)
Haven't eaten there, but the place has a great kitchy vibe, good music and friendly staff. Have loved it every time I've gone!!
Jupitor Bar
Where the straights in the West end drink - when they are not hanging out in Celebrities. Ok place, never very busy, food is adequate I suppose. Needs a bit of a scrub down as it looks and feels grungy...
NOT a gay bar but in Davie Village
Pretty cool vibe and busy with good food. This place is cool but not gay. Always full of (str8) people chillin' out to acid jazz, trance. A real peek at what the west end is like for the "straight friends of gay people".
